Pass OET First Time — OET Preparation for Doctors, Nurses & Healthcare Professionals
Helping doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals pass OET first time.
Whether you’re applying for professional registration, preparing for a new role, planning an international move, or working towards the next stage of your career, OET can feel like a major hurdle.
Many of my students are highly qualified healthcare professionals whose medical knowledge is not the problem. The challenge is demonstrating their communication skills effectively under exam conditions.
My lessons focus particularly on speaking, writing and communication skills, helping you speak clearly, naturally and confidently while understanding exactly what OET assessors are looking for.
Many candidates have strong English and excellent clinical knowledge. My role is to help you demonstrate that effectively in the OET exam.
How ready are you for your OET exam?
If you’re not sure what your level is, or you’d like to talk about the areas you don’t feel confident in, have a free chat with me. I’ll tell you what you need to work on in order to pass your OET exam.
I’m an OET Knowledge-certified teacher and I have completed OET’s official teacher training, covering Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking preparation.
Is OET standing between you and your next step?

For many healthcare professionals, OET is far more than an English exam. It may be the final requirement before you can register with a professional body, start a new job, move abroad, begin specialist training, or take the next step in your career.
You may already be working in healthcare and communicating with patients and colleagues every day. Yet achieving the score you need can still feel frustratingly difficult. Perhaps:
- You need a B, B+ or A to meet registration requirements
- You’ve taken OET before and narrowly missed your target score
- Your English is already strong, but your exam results don’t seem to reflect it
- You’re a specialist who feels less confident discussing unfamiliar medical topics
- A job offer, registration, fellowship or visa application depends on passing
- You’re unsure exactly what assessors are looking for
- You know you’re capable of passing, but don’t know what is holding you back
If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. Many of the healthcare professionals I work with are highly capable candidates who need targeted support rather than general English lessons.
Why OET Can Be Difficult Even for Experienced Healthcare Professionals
Many OET preparation websites focus on the four papers:
- Reading
- Listening
- Speaking
- Writing
While these are important, they don’t always explain why capable healthcare professionals struggle to achieve the score they need.
You Already Communicate Professionally
Most candidates preparing for OET are not beginners. Many are doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals who communicate effectively every day in clinical environments.
The challenge is that OET assesses communication in a very specific way. Candidates can lose marks despite having strong English because they:
- include too much or too little information
- miss the purpose of a writing task
- sound overly direct during role-plays
- fail to demonstrate empathy and reassurance
- focus on medical accuracy rather than communication
Understanding what assessors are looking for can make a significant difference.
You’re Often Being Tested Outside Your Speciality
One of the biggest frustrations for many candidates is that OET covers a broad range of healthcare situations. For example:
- A psychiatrist may need to discuss diabetes management.
- A surgeon may be writing about palliative care.
- A dermatologist may be role-playing a conversation about mental health.
- A radiologist may need to explain treatment options or lifestyle changes.
Even highly experienced clinicians can feel less confident when discussing unfamiliar areas outside their day-to-day practice.
Part of my role is helping you develop the language, confidence and communication strategies needed to handle these situations effectively.
The Stakes Are High
For many candidates, OET is linked to a significant life or career goal.
Your result may affect:
- GMC registration
- NMC registration
- professional licensing
- visa applications
- job offers
- specialist training programmes
- fellowships
- relocation plans
When so much depends on a single exam result, it’s understandable to feel pressure.
My aim is to help you understand exactly where you are now, identify the areas that need improvement, and create a realistic plan to achieve the score you need.
My English Is Already Good.
Why Am I Still Missing a B?

Many healthcare professionals feel frustrated because they can work in English every day yet still fall short in OET.
It’s not just about English
You may already communicate confidently with patients and colleagues. OET assesses how effectively you communicate in specific healthcare situations, not simply how much English you know.
Task fulfilment matters
Many candidates lose marks because they don’t fully achieve the purpose of the task. A technically correct answer is not always an effective OET response.
Communication is assessed
In speaking role-plays, assessors are looking for empathy, reassurance, active listening and patient-centred communication as well as language accuracy.
Organisation affects your score
In writing, even strong English can score poorly if information is poorly organised, difficult to follow or not adapted to the reader’s needs.
Relevance is critical
One of the most common mistakes is including too much information. OET rewards candidates who select and communicate the most relevant information clearly and efficiently.
