IELTS Preparation (Academic & General Training)

Helping IELTS candidates achieve the band score they need

Many students have strong English but still struggle to achieve their target IELTS score.

Whether you need IELTS for university, work, professional registration or immigration, I can help you improve your Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening skills and focus on the areas that are holding your score back.

Are you worried about passing your IELTS exam?

Perhaps:

  • You’re stuck at IELTS 6.5 but need 7.0 or higher
  • You need a higher score for university or immigration
  • Your Writing score is lower than your other skills
  • You struggle with the Speaking exam under pressure
  • You’ve taken IELTS before and didn’t achieve your target score
  • You know your English is good but your scores aren’t improving
  • You know you’re capable of passing, but don’t know what is holding you back

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. Many EOI students already have the knowledge they need but lack the confidence, exam skills or individual feedback required to demonstrate it successfully.

Why IELTS can be difficult even for strong English learners

Knowing English and passing IELTS are different things

Many candidates communicate effectively in English every day but still struggle to achieve the score they need.

Writing is often the biggest obstacle

Many students achieve strong scores in Reading and Listening but are held back by Writing Task 1 or Task 2.

Speaking under pressure feels different

Even confident English speakers can find it difficult to perform naturally in a timed speaking test.

Small mistakes can affect your score

Moving from IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 or from 7.0 to 7.5 often requires attention to detail rather than dramatic improvements in English.

Understanding the assessment criteria matters

Many candidates are unsure why they received a particular score or what examiners are actually looking for.

My English is good. Why am I still getting IELTS 6.5?

Are you frustrated with your exam progress? Get targeted help so you pass your English exam

Many candidates are surprised to discover that good English alone is not enough. Achieving your target IELTS score also requires an understanding of the assessment criteria, common pitfalls and what examiners are looking for.

01.

IELTS Writing is often the problem

Many candidates are surprised when Writing turns out to be their lowest score. You may have good grammar and vocabulary, but still lose marks because your answer doesn’t fully address the task or develop ideas clearly enough.

02.

You’re aiming for a very specific score

Many exams are simply pass or fail. IELTS is different. The jump from 6.5 to 7.0 or from 7.0 to 7.5 is often much harder than candidates expect.

03.

One paper can hold everything back

It’s common to achieve strong scores in Reading and Listening but miss your overall target because of Speaking or Writing. For many candidates, the challenge is not English itself but consistency across all four papers.

04.

Nobody has explained why you’re losing marks

Many students know their score but don’t understand what it means. Without detailed feedback, it can be difficult to identify the specific weaknesses preventing improvement.

05.

IELTS tests exam performance, not just English

Many candidates use English confidently at work or university yet still struggle to achieve the score they need. Understanding the assessment criteria and performing well under exam conditions are important parts of success.

Stuck at 6.5? Let’s Find Out Why

One of the most common frustrations in IELTS is knowing that your English is good but still not achieving the score you need. Many candidates repeat the exam several times without really understanding what is preventing them from reaching 7.0 or higher.

I’ll help you identify where marks are being lost, explain what examiners are looking for and focus on the changes most likely to improve your score.

—Understanding where marks are being lost
—Honest feedback about your current level

The Discussion Group is suitable for strong B2 and C1 learners, including IELTS candidates aiming for a higher band score. Please note that it focuses on developing your overall spoken English rather than practising IELTS exam tasks.

    FAQs

Frequently asked questions about preparing for IELTS English with me

This is one of the most common things I hear. Many IELTS candidates use English successfully at work or university but still don’t achieve the score they need.

The problem is often not your English. It may be understanding what examiners are looking for, weaknesses in one particular paper, or small mistakes that keep reducing your score. Together, we’ll identify what is holding you back and focus on the areas most likely to improve your result.

Writing is often the paper that causes the most frustration. Many candidates have strong grammar and vocabulary but still lose marks because of task achievement, organisation or development of ideas.

I’ll show you exactly where marks are being lost and what you need to do differently to achieve a higher score.

The jump from 6.5 to 7.0 is often harder than candidates expect. At this level, small weaknesses can make a big difference.

The first step is understanding why you are currently achieving 6.5. Once we identify the problem areas, we can focus on the changes most likely to help you reach your target score.

That depends entirely on where you are losing marks. Some candidates need to improve their Writing, while others are being held back by Speaking or by one recurring weakness across several papers.

I’ll help you identify the areas that will give you the biggest return for your effort.

Yes. Many universities, professional bodies and registration organisations require a minimum score in each individual paper as well as an overall score.

Lessons can focus on the specific paper that is preventing you from reaching the score you need.

Yes. I can provide detailed feedback on Task 1 and Task 2, explaining where marks are being lost and what you need to do to improve.

You’ll receive practical feedback rather than just a score.

Frustrated with your English exam preparation progress? Struggling to pass?

Yes. If you’d like to experience the speaking test before the real exam, I can run a mock speaking test and provide detailed feedback on your strengths, weaknesses and likely band score.

Yes. Many candidates know what they want to say but struggle to demonstrate their full ability under exam conditions.

We’ll work on fluency, confidence, pronunciation, developing ideas and understanding what examiners are looking for.

Many candidates repeat IELTS several times without understanding why their score isn’t improving.

Often there are specific weaknesses or recurring mistakes that have never been identified. Honest feedback can help you understand exactly what is preventing further progress.

Yes. If you’re unsure where you stand, I can assess your speaking and writing and give you honest feedback about your current level, strengths, weaknesses and likely IELTS band score.

Yes. I can help with both Academic IELTS and General Training, depending on your goals and the version of the exam you need to take.

That depends on your current level, your target score and your exam date.

Some students book a small number of lessons to focus on a particular weakness, while others prepare over several months. During the consultation, I’ll give you an honest opinion about what I think you need and whether your goal is realistic within your timeframe.
