How to Get Better at Understanding Different English Accents

The best TV series and films for advanced English listening and accent practice

If you’re preparing for C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency, IELTS or simply want to understand real English more confidently, one of the best things you can do is watch great television.

The key word is great.

Life is too short to watch mediocre series simply because they feature a particular accent. The programmes below are either ones I’ve watched and loved myself, or those that come highly recommended and are firmly on my own watch list.

Listening to a wide variety of English accents is one of the fastest ways to improve your comprehension. In real life, you’ll hear far more than “BBC English” or “General American”. A conversation in Dublin sounds very different from one in Birmingham. A detective in Louisiana doesn’t sound like a NASA engineer in Houston, and someone from Yorkshire speaks very differently from someone in London.

How I’ve organised this guide

I’ve deliberately limited this guide to Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV+. They’re the three streaming services I normally switch between subscribing to, and between them they offer an outstanding range of English-language television from around the world. Availability changes from country to country, so do check what’s available where you live.

I’ve organised the recommendations by country (and, where appropriate, by region) so you can deliberately explore different varieties of English rather than simply watching whatever appears on your homepage.

The aim isn’t to copy these accents. It’s to train your ear so that authentic spoken English becomes familiar.

I’m also working on downloadable guides for each language featured on this page, so check back in the future if you don’t yet see the guide for the langauge/country you’re interested in.

How to watch these series for listening practice

For advanced learners, I recommend watching in stages.

First, watch with English subtitles. Do not use subtitles in your own language unless you are completely lost.

Then choose one short scene and watch it again without subtitles. Focus on rhythm, not just individual words.

Ask yourself:

  • Who speaks quickly?
  • Who speaks clearly?
  • Who drops sounds?
  • Which words are linked together?
  • Which expressions are unfamiliar?
  • Does the accent affect vowels, consonants or sentence rhythm?

Soon, you’ll find those same expressions and sentence patterns coming out of your own mouth — easily and naturally. They’ll help you sound more fluent, confident and real — without memorising long lists of idioms or grammar rules.

Where to start…

If you feel overwhelmed by all the choices, don’t worry. You don’t need to watch everything! Start with one series that genuinely interests you and gradually explore different varieties of English as your confidence grows.

If you’re looking for an easy starting point, I’d recommend these:

  • Bad Sisters (Ireland) — clear, modern Irish English with dark humour and an engaging mystery.
  • Dept. Q (Scotland) — a gripping crime drama with modern Scottish English, balanced by the clear English accent of one of the main characters.
  • Humans (London & Southern England) — clear, contemporary Southern British English that’s easy to follow.
  • The Newsreader (Australia) — one of the best introductions to Australian English, with clear, professional speech.
  • Schitt’s Creek (Canada) — warm, funny and one of the easiest ways to become familiar with Canadian English.
  • For All Mankind (USA) — clear, educated American English that’s ideal for building confidence.
  • Bend It Like Beckham (London & Southern England – Film) — a wonderful introduction to London English, British Asian English and multicultural Britain.

The best series for improving your listening isn’t always the easiest one—it’s the one that appeals to you the most. If a story captivates you, you’ll naturally spend more time listening, and that’s when real progress begins.
